Eligibility Criteria
Candidates of all nationalities are eligible to apply. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- They must have obtained a Ph.D. between 1 September 2021 and 1 September 2026, or have official approval to defend their thesis by the start of the programme (1 September 2026).
- The Ph.D. defence must take place no later than 31 December 2026.

- Applicants who have experienced career interruptions due to maternity or paternity leave, illness, or compulsory military service may request an extension to the five-year eligibility window. These circumstances must be noted in the ‘Additional Notes’ section of the application. Supporting documentation will be requested if selected.
- Current early-stage researchers affiliated with the EUI—whether enrolled in its doctoral programme, employed by the EUI, or currently on an EUI-hosted fellowship—are not eligible. Former EUI affiliates may reapply only after being continuously employed or engaged in a full-time fellowship outside the EUI for at least one year by the application deadline.
Language Proficiency
Proficiency in English at CEFR level C1 is expected. While an English language certificate is not required at the time of application, successful candidates must provide supporting documentation upon registration. Acceptable proof includes:
- A recognized English proficiency certificate, such as:
- IELTS (minimum score: 7.5)
- TOEFL iBT (minimum score: 110)
- Cambridge Proficiency (grades A, B, or C)
- Cambridge Advanced (CAE) with grade A or B
- Proof of academic work in English (e.g., doctoral thesis, published article or book chapter of at least 6,000 words in English).
