A Commitment to Combatting Misinformation
The Fact-Checking Fellowship Programme is a 12-day intensive training designed specifically for journalists who are committed to truth-based reporting and who actively engage in or aspire to engage in fact-checking practices. As misinformation and disinformation continue to pose serious threats to democratic dialogue, public health, and social cohesion, the programme aims to equip participants with the competencies necessary to meet these challenges head-on.
Misinformation has increasingly influenced public opinion, especially in regions where access to verified information is limited. Africa Check, a leading fact-checking organization, and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, a German foundation promoting democracy and development, have joined forces to create a training initiative that empowers journalists with not only knowledge but practical tools to counter false narratives.
Training Location and Language
The fellowship will be held in November 2025 in Nairobi, Kenya, hosted at the regional offices of Africa Check. This central location offers an ideal setting for cross-country collaboration and exchange among participants.
All training sessions will be conducted in English, ensuring clear and consistent communication throughout the programme. Participants are therefore expected to have a strong command of the English language to fully benefit from the sessions and engage in the group activities.
Core Objectives of the Fellowship
The Fact-Checking Fellowship Programme is more than just a training course—it is a developmental experience designed to refine the professional capacity of African journalists. Participants selected for the programme will benefit in multiple ways, including:
Deepening Understanding of Fact-Checking Methodologies
Participants will be introduced to advanced fact-checking techniques and verification tools. These include digital forensics, reverse image searches, open-source investigations, and techniques for analyzing data and claims. The training will also cover best practices for source evaluation and ethical considerations in fact-checking.
Strengthening the Ability to Identify and Counter Misinformation
A key focus of the programme is building participants’ capacity to identify false or misleading information and develop effective strategies for debunking it. This involves learning how misinformation spreads, understanding the motives behind it, and crafting fact-based content that is both accessible and credible.
Collaboration with Leading Experts
The programme brings together a network of experienced trainers, journalists, and media experts from across Africa and beyond. Participants will have opportunities to engage with these professionals, ask questions, and receive tailored feedback on their work. These interactions are designed to inspire, challenge, and support fellows as they grow in their roles.
Building a Pan-African Fact-Checking Community
In addition to practical training, the fellowship fosters a collaborative environment where journalists from different African countries can share experiences, ideas, and challenges. This cross-cultural engagement helps build lasting professional relationships and a stronger continental network of fact-checkers.
