JustFilms exists at the intersection of art, social justice, and public imagination. Through this program, the Ford Foundation supports filmmakers who use documentary film as a tool to spark dialogue, challenge injustice, and foster empathy. The initiative aligns with the foundation’s broader mission of addressing inequality in all its forms—particularly in relation to gender, race, disability, and economic justice.
Applications are open to filmmakers worldwide, with particular consideration for projects originating from or engaging with regions where the foundation maintains regional offices. The current call for submissions will close at 11:59 PM (Eastern Time) on Thursday, October 30, 2025.
What the Program Supports
JustFilms provides grants for feature-length documentary projects—defined as films of at least 50 minutes in duration—in which the filmmakers retain creative control and rights ownership. Eligible projects may be in any stage of development, including content creation, production, or post-production.
The program does not support:
- Student films or narrative (fiction) films
- Short films, docuseries, or episodic works
- Commissioned projects where filmmakers do not hold rights
- Films that have already premiered or been broadcast
- New media formats such as AR, VR, or podcasts
- Impact or outreach campaigns
JustFilms prioritizes projects that are independent, socially relevant, and artistically innovative, with the potential to influence public discourse and inspire action.
Evaluation and Selection
Each submission undergoes a rigorous assessment based on four weighted criteria designed to identify projects that best embody the values and priorities of the Ford Foundation.
- Thematic Alignment (30%)
Reviewers assess how well the project aligns with the Ford Foundation’s overarching mission and the JustFilms strategy. This includes evaluating how the documentary explores systems of power—political, cultural, or economic—and whether it integrates themes of gender, race, or disability justice. Projects that also reflect the priorities of the foundation’s regional offices or other program areas receive additional consideration. - Intersectional Representation (25%)
This criterion examines how the project represents diverse identities and experiences. Reviewers evaluate the depth of the filmmaker’s intersectional approach, geographic relevance, and commitment to inclusive storytelling. The foundation particularly values projects led by or centering underrepresented voices and communities.
-
- Innovation in Storytelling (25%)
The program seeks documentaries that expand the boundaries of nonfiction storytelling. Reviewers assess a film’s creative vision, originality, and potential to shift public narratives. Innovation may be reflected in artistic technique, narrative structure, audience engagement strategy, or thematic approach. - Production Viability and Independence (20%)
This criterion focuses on the project’s feasibility and autonomy. Reviewers consider the filmmakers’ capacity to complete the project, available resources, and the independence of the production process. A strong proposal demonstrates a clear plan, capable team, and commitment to maintaining creative integrity.

Submission Process
Applicants are encouraged to review the JustFilms FAQ before submitting proposals. The application materials requested align closely with the Documentary Core Application, a standardized format also used by the International Documentary Association, Sundance Documentary Film Program, and other leading funders.
After the initial review, selected applicants may be invited to provide additional materials for further consideration. Due to limited staffing, the Ford Foundation cannot provide individualized feedback or consultations regarding submissions.
Commitment to Inclusion and Artistic Freedom
JustFilms underscores the Ford Foundation’s belief that storytelling is essential to building a just and equitable world. The initiative supports filmmakers who challenge dominant narratives, illuminate untold stories, and confront systems of oppression. Projects selected for funding demonstrate not only artistic excellence but also a clear commitment to social and cultural transformation.
By fostering independent voices, the program contributes to a more inclusive global film ecosystem—one that reflects a multiplicity of perspectives and honors creative autonomy.
Staying Connected
Applicants and filmmakers are encouraged to stay informed about funding opportunities, updates, and stories by subscribing to the Ford Foundation’s newsletter. The foundation’s communications provide insights into its work across social justice, arts, and global development.
The Ford Foundation remains committed to supporting artists whose work drives awareness, justice, and lasting change. Through JustFilms, it continues to invest in courageous filmmaking that reshapes culture and redefines the narratives of power, equity, and human dignity.
