The Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) invites applications for the Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship 2027, a prestigious six-month fellowship in Education for Sustainable Peace. Fellowship Details

The successful candidate will undertake a six-month research stay at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) in Brunswick, Germany. During this time, they will have the opportunity to work closely with the GEI’s international network of scholars, educators, and practitioners.

The fellowship benefits include:

• A monthly stipend of EUR 3,300 for a six-month period (in exceptional cases, shorter stays of at least three months may be considered).
• Economy-class return airfare to Germany.
• Administrative and publication support from the Georg Arnhold Program coordinators.

Fellows are expected to engage actively in the academic and professional life of the Institute, sharing insights and contributing to ongoing discussions on peace education and sustainable societal transformation.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are invited from distinguished scholars in the humanities, political and social sciences, education sciences, or law, as well as experienced practitioners working in the field of peace education. Candidates from sectors such as journalism, government, and non-governmental organizations are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • A minimum of five years of advanced professional experience in areas related to education, peacebuilding, or social transformation.

Obligations of the Senior Fellow

The appointed Georg Arnhold Senior Fellow will undertake independent and collaborative research aligned with the program’s focus on education for sustainable peace, with a strong preference for projects related to educational media or curriculum development in post-conflict contexts.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the intellectual design and organization of the annual Georg Arnhold Conference, in collaboration with the Program Coordinator.
• Presenting their ongoing research at the GEI Research Colloquium.
• Participating in the daily academic activities of the GEI during the fellowship term.
• Publishing the outcomes of their research within one year of completing the fellowship.

Fellows are responsible for securing necessary travel documentation, such as passports, visas, and health insurance, for their stay in Germany.

Application and Selection Process

The application process involves five stages:

1. Online Application – Applicants submit an online form including a 1,000-word project summary outlining their proposed research or practice-based project.
2. Pre-selection – The GEI academic committee conducts an internal review to identify eligible and promising applications.
3. Shortlisting – Up to ten applications are forwarded to the Georg Arnhold Program’s Academic Advisory Board, which then shortlists three finalists.
4. Submission of Full Proposal – Shortlisted candidates are invited to submit a detailed project proposal (up to 25 pages), a short CV, and a list of publications, highlighting the impact of their work (e.g., cited works, projects, or policy contributions).
5. Final Selection – The three finalists are invited for an online interview with the Academic Advisory Board during its annual meeting. The final fellow will be selected at this stage.
