Applications for the Writing-Up Grants 2026 are now open. These grants provide support to doctoral candidates in the social sciences working on urban and regional research who are nearing the completion of their dissertations. The grant aims to help early-career scholars focus on finishing their research and writing strong, impactful dissertations.

Who Can Apply?
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Doctoral candidates in the social sciences working on urban and regional themes.
- Individuals close to submitting their dissertation but requiring additional support to complete the writing.
- Scholars from low- and middle-income countries, as classified by the World Bank.
Preference will be given to students who completed their first degrees (BA/BSc, MA/MSc) in their home country or another low- or middle-income country. Applicants who have previously been awarded an IJURR Foundation studentship are not eligible to apply.

Grant Details
- Grants are awarded on a case-by-case basis, with a maximum value of £6,000. In 2024, awards ranged between £1,000 and £5,600.
- Funds can be used for university fees, accommodation, or equipment expenses while writing up, but are not intended to cover all student costs.
- Grants may be held in any department where the Trustees are satisfied with supervisory arrangements for urban and regional research. Evidence of continuing registration by the university department is required.
- The Trustees may increase the grant amount in cases of special circumstances or hardship. Requests for extensions will not be considered.
Eligibility Requirements
- Enrolled in a doctoral programme in urban and regional studies.
- National of a low- or middle-income country.
- Completed all fieldwork, commenced writing up, and have a confirmed dissertation submission date (ideally within six months of award).
- Typically in the third year or later of doctoral study.
