Eligibility Criteria

FAO is seeking candidates who are highly motivated and academically qualified in fields relevant to its mandate, including agriculture, nutrition, food security, environment, economics, and related areas. Applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in or recently graduated from an undergraduate or graduate degree program recognized by the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
  • Be aged 21–30 years at the time of application.
  • Be national of an FAO member country.
  • Have a working knowledge of at least one FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, Spanish); knowledge of a second language is advantageous.
  • Demonstrate the ability to adapt to international multicultural environments and possess strong communication skills.

FAO strongly encourages applications from:

  • Female candidates
  • Nationals of underrepresented or non-member countries
  • Candidates from Low-Income Food-Deficit Countries (LIFDCs), Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and Small Island Developing States (SIDS)
  • Interns must have appropriate residence or immigration status in the host country before joining.
  • Individuals who have previously completed an FAO internship are not eligible.
  • Interns with family members employed at FAO are ineligible.
  • FAO provides a monthly stipend for interns who are not sponsored by a university or other entity.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads international efforts to defeat hunger and to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. With over 195 Members, FAO works in over 130 countries worldwide. We believe that everyone can play a part in ending hunger. 

The Internship Programme aims to attract talented young women and men who are strongly motivated to share their new perspectives, innovative ideas, and latest academic experience in FAO’s domains. The Programme provides a learning opportunity to the participants to supplement their academic knowledge with a practical work assignment in a field related to the work of FAO.
