- The United Nations Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2026 Polio Press Fellowship for Individual Reporting, geared towards journalists interested in reporting stories on polio eradication. Preference will be given to reporters interested in traveling to the following countries: Angola; Chad; the Democratic Republic of the Congo; Ethiopia; Namibia; Nigeria; Pakistan; and Papua New Guinea.
Selected fellows are expected to participate in virtual polio training sessions conducted by the UN Foundation before traveling to a country (or two countries, if within Africa) at the forefront of the polio eradication effort to gather content and interviews related to their proposed topic. On completion of the trip, fellows are expected to publish their work through reputable and recognized media outlets. Reporters from around the world with proven experience publishing in national and/or global outlets are encouraged to apply.Individual awards are available for up to $7,000. Applications must include a budget proposal with a cost breakdown for transportation, visa fees, accommodation, interpretation, and other travel expenses in their application. Accepted fellows are responsible for making their own travel arrangments, including obtaining visas and any required authorizations for their selected reporting countries. While the UN Foundation will provide a letter of support for the journalist’s application, we are unable to intervene in visa/authorization processes.Applications are due no later than Wednesday, January 7, 2026. Finalists will be contacted in February for interviews, references, and other due diligence. Travel will take place between April and mid-September 2026.
Applicants are required to submit a detailed project proposal and budget as part of this process. We recommend you prepare your proposal and budget prior to starting the application.
- We recognize that AI tools can be helpful in organizing your thoughts and refining your writing. However, your proposal should showcase your individual perspective, relevant experience, and genuine understanding of the reporting opportunity. We are looking for specificity and originality.
- As fluency or working proficiency in English is necessary for this fellowship, applications submitted in languages other than English will not be considered.
