Description

Journalists and newsrooms across Southern Africa are invited to apply for the AI Journalism Innovation Fellowship, a programme designed to advance public service journalism through responsible and cutting-edge artificial intelligence solutions. This fellowship is offered by DW Akademie’s Dialogue Fund and aims to support media practitioners who are ready to combine innovation with integrity.

What Selected Teams Will Receive

Each successful team will benefit from comprehensive support designed to bring their AI project to life. The fellowship package includes:

  • A €4,000 fellowship grant to develop and implement the proposed idea
  • Specialised coaching and technical guidance throughout the programme
  • Training in human-centred design and journalism-focused product development
  • Participation in the in-person IdeaLab in Windhoek, Namibia, for up to two team members
  • Membership in a regional community of media innovators for ongoing collaboration and knowledge-sharing

Programme Structure

The fellowship begins with an intensive IdeaLab week from 26–30 January 2026 in Windhoek, Namibia. During this stage, participants refine their concepts, prototype their AI tools and engage with other innovators working on similar challenges.

After the IdeaLab, teams enter the build phase, where they continue developing their project with seed funding, mentorship and technical support. Participants will also join regular virtual sessions to track progress, exchange feedback and strengthen their solutions.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Based in Namibia, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia, Eswatini or Lesotho
  • At least 21 years old and holding a valid passport
  • Supported by their newsroom or organisation
  • Committed to ethical journalism and public service values
  • Available to participate in both in-person and virtual programme activities

The programme is open not only to traditional newsrooms but also to civil-society organisations that engage in journalistic work, including fact-checking groups, information providers and community media platforms.

How to Apply

Submit your pitch before 23 November 2025 and take the opportunity to help shape the future of journalism in Southern Africa through responsible AI innovation.
