Oranisation Overview

Our Mission

The Graduate School of Frontier Sciences (GSFS) was established in 1998 to create new academic fields based on a concept, which we call gakuyugo (transdisciplinary approaches). Supported by all graduate schools of the University of Tokyo, an independent graduate school was launched exclusively for master's and doctoral courses. It consists of eleven departments that belong to Division of Transdisciplinary Sciences, Division of Biosciences, and Division of Environmental Studies; the Graduate Program in Sustainability Science, which belongs to all the three divisions; and two unique research centers.

To tackle significant interdisciplinary problems that cannot be dealt in a sole conventionally categorized field, enthusiastic leading experts joined the GSFS from fields of nanoscience, material sciences, energy sciences, complex systems, biosciences, medicines, environmental studies, and international cooperation The GSFS shares the philosophy of keeping the atmosphere of research and educational environment open with no boundaries between fields and for members of the diverse community consists of approximately 200 faculty members and 1,600 graduate students to closely interact and cooperate to address new issues humans are facing.
