A Legacy of Excellence

Since its inception, the Merck Innovation Cup has grown into one of the world’s most respected innovation development programs, earning international recognition through Edison AwardsStevie Awards, and the Innovationspreis der Deutschen Wirtschaft. Its success lies in its commitment to nurturing ideas and empowering young scientists to think beyond the laboratory — to explore the intersection of science, technology, and entrepreneurship.

The program has become a launchpad for bold ideas that align with Merck’s mission to advance science and technology for a better tomorrow. Participants don’t just compete; they join a community of thinkers united by curiosity, creativity, and a passion for solving complex global challenges.

The Merck Innovation

Oranisation Overview

The Merck Innovation Cup is more than a competition; it is a platform for discovery and growth. Participants work in interdisciplinary teams across focus areas including Oncology, Neuroscience and Immunology, Drug Discovery, Fertility, Synthetic Biology, Smart Manufacturing, and Advanced Electronic Materials. Guided by experienced Merck professionals, teams develop business plans for innovative solutions addressing unmet global needs.

Throughout the week, participants gain insights into pharmaceutical R&D processes — from ideation to commercialization — while learning how new products are discovered, developed, and brought to market. The camp also provides a rare chance to connect directly with Merck’s senior management, accomplished scientists, and alumni of previous Innovation Cup editions, creating an unmatched environment for mentorship and professional networking.

Prizes and Professional Pathways

The Innovation Cup’s rewards extend far beyond the €20,000 grand prize. The winning team receives a shared award of €20,000, while the runner-up and third-place teams earn €5,000 and €3,000, respectively. Selected top-performing participants may also be offered permanent employment opportunities with Merck, based on their contributions and potential.

Following the event, the most promising business plans are reviewed for possible implementation, allowing exceptional ideas to move from concept to execution within Merck’s global innovation ecosystem. Travel, accommodation, and meal costs are fully covered by Merck KGaA, ensuring participants can focus solely on collaboration and creativity.

Learning from the Best

A highlight of the Innovation Cup experience is the Alumni Conference held on the first day of the summer camp. This session reunites past participants who have gone on to impressive careers in academia, entrepreneurship, and industry. Through presentations and informal networking, current participants gain valuable insights from those who once stood in their place.

Previous attendees describe the Innovation Cup as a “turning point” in their careers — a week that blends learning, creativity, and inspiration in equal measure. As one participant put it, “It has been one of the most unique, challenging, and mind-provoking experiences of my life.”
