The fellowship supports work that contributes to a deeper understanding of the cultural, intellectual, and artistic movements of the Renaissance period, especially in their wider European and global dimensions.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a PhD by the time of application (proof of degree required)
- Not be pursuing a second doctoral degree
- Be fluent in English and have at least a reading knowledge of Italian
- Possess a strong academic background in Italian Renaissance Studies
- Propose a project that can be substantially advanced using the resources available in London and Florence
- Be unaffiliated with either the Warburg Institute or Villa I Tatti in recent years (priority is given to new applicants)
- Proposals to revise a doctoral dissertation for publication will not be considered
Fellowship Terms: Villa I Tatti (Florence)

- Fellows will reside in Florence and conduct research from January to June 2027.
- This is a full-time residential fellowship; external teaching, employment, or concurrent fellowships are not permitted.

- Fellows must live in the Florence area and be present at Villa I Tatti at least three days per week.

- Fellows will have access to the Biblioteca Berenson, receive a reserved workspace, and participate in the intellectual life of the Center.
- A monthly stipend of USD 5,200 will be provided.
- A relocation supplement of up to USD 1,800 may be offered.
- A rent-free apartment may be available (utilities excluded); if not, a housing subsidy will be provided.
- Fellows are responsible for securing the necessary visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health insurance.

Fellowship Terms: Warburg Institute (London)
- Fellows will be based in London from September to December 2026.
- The fellowship is residential and may not be held concurrently with another award.
- Fellows must reside in London during the term, apart from short research-related travel.
- A monthly stipend of GBP 3,000 will be provided.
- Fellows will be given access to the Warburg Institute Library, Photographic Collection, and Archive, and assigned an academic advisor.
- Participation in the intellectual and academic life of the Institute is expected.
- Non-EU candidates are responsible for securing a UK visa. .
Application Process
- Applications must be submitted in English using the online application system by November 15, 2025 (midnight, Cambridge, MA time).
- Only one application per academic year may be submitted to I Tatti fellowships.
