World Bank

Oranisation Overview

The World Bank was established in 1944 at the Bretton Woods Conference as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) to help rebuild countries devastated by World War II. It opened in 1946 and made its first loan to France for reconstruction. Over time, its focus expanded from post-war recovery to global development, with its mission shifting to poverty eradication and promoting shared prosperity by supporting infrastructure, health, education, and governance. The World Bank Group also evolved, creating the International Finance Corporation in 1956 and the International Development Association in 1960 to provide financing and services to a wider range of countries and projects.
