The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is committed to building a cohort of next-generation African leaders. Scholars are expected to give back to their communities and contribute meaningfully to the continent’s development through leadership, entrepreneurship, innovation, and community service. After graduation, alumni are supported in their transition to employment, further education, or entrepreneurial ventures.
What the Program Offers
The scholarship provides comprehensive financial and academic support, including:
- Full tuition fees
- Accommodation and living expenses
- Learning materials and textbooks
- Travel costs (where applicable)
- Access to mentorship, leadership development, and entrepreneurship training
- Community service and internship opportunities
- Academic and psychosocial support
Who Can Apply?
Eligible applicants must:

- Be a citizen of an African country
- Have applied to and been accepted into an eligible undergraduate, Honours, or Master’s program at the University of Pretoria
- Demonstrate academic excellence
- Show evidence of leadership potential and a commitment to community service
- Be facing significant financial or social barriers to education
- Priority consideration is given to young people living with disabilities and those from marginalized communities, including refugees and displaced persons
Application Process
Step 1:
Apply for admission to the University of Pretoria (UP) in your chosen program of study.
Step 2:
Download and complete the hard copy of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application form. The form can be found on the University of Pretoria’s official website.
Step 3:
Submit your completed scholarship application along with all supporting documents electronically to:

Ensure your submission includes:
- Completed application form
- Proof of application/admission to UP
- Certified academic transcripts
- Motivation letter and/or personal statement
- Reference letters (if required)
