Application Deadline: Sunday, November 23, 2025, at 11:59 PM GMT
Program Duration: January – December 2026 | Commitment: 15–20 hours/week | Mode: Fully Virtual

About the Program

STEM for Development, in collaboration with The RNA Institute at the University at Albany, is pleased to announce the Virtual Research Traineeship 2026, a transformative global research and training initiative. Supported by the Talent Mobility Fund, this prestigious, fully virtual program offers a year-long, mentored research experience for exceptional students and early-career professionals from Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) as classified by the OECD.

The Virtual Research Traineeship aims to equip the next generation of global scientists with the technical, analytical, and professional skills needed to thrive in competitive international research environments, particularly in the rapidly evolving field of bioinformatics.

Participants will engage in mentored independent research, receive comprehensive graduate school preparation, and benefit from a rich, collaborative learning environment. This is a unique opportunity to become part of an international network of emerging researchers committed to advancing equity in STEM education and research.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome applications from students and recent graduates who are passionate about scientific discovery, committed to professional development, and eager to contribute to solving global challenges through research. To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a national of a Low- or Middle-Income Country (LMIC), according to the OECD classification.
  • Be a current undergraduate or Master’s student, or a recent graduate (within the past 24 months) in a STEM-related discipline (e.g., biology, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, biotechnology, data science, etc.).
  • Be proficient in English (written and spoken).
  • Have reliable internet access and a personal computer capable of running required software.
  • Possess prior experience or strong interest in R programmingcommand-line tools, or bioinformatics.

Applicants from underrepresented regions or institutions with limited access to research infrastructure are especially encouraged to apply.

Program Structure and Focus

The Virtual Research Traineeship 2026 is designed to provide participants with a rigorous, real-world research experience that bridges academic knowledge and practical application. The core components of the program include:

1. Mentored Independent Research

Trainees will be paired with a faculty mentor from The RNA Institute, University at Albany, and will conduct an independent research project in a bioinformatics-related field. Research areas may include RNA sequencing analysis, non-coding RNA function, computational genomics, transcriptomics, and more.

2. Technical Skill Development

Trainees will receive specialized training in:

  • R programming for biological data analysis
  • Command-line tools and high-throughput data pipelines
  • Scientific computing and statistical methods
  • Data visualization and interpretation

3. Scientific Communication

Participants will enhance their ability to:

  • Write scientific reports and articles
  • Prepare abstracts and manuscripts
  • Present findings in professional formats
  • Engage in peer review and collaborative critique

4. Graduate School Preparation

The program includes tailored workshops and one-on-one coaching sessions focused on:

  • Graduate program selection
  • Crafting competitive applications and statements of purpose
  • Identifying funding and fellowship opportunities
  • Academic interview preparation and networking strategies

Benefits of Participation

Selected trainees will benefit from a range of unique advantages designed to support both their academic trajectory and long-term research ambitions:

  • Mentorship from world-class faculty at The RNA Institute
  • Advanced training in bioinformatics tools and methods
  • Collaborative research experience within an international cohort
  • Official Certificate of Completion and a Digital Badge in Advanced Research and Graduate Readiness
  • Individualized guidance on graduate school applications and career planning
  • Access to global peer networks of emerging scientists and researchers

This opportunity is fully funded, and there are no fees or costs to selected participants. However, selection will be highly competitive, with only eight (8) trainees accepted for the 2026 cohort.
